Nutritional support for horses with trigeminal-mediated headshaking

Boron is a trace mineral that has attracted interest in equine nutrition, particularly when used in conjunction with magnesium for horses affected by trigeminal-mediated headshaking.

A small controlled study involving six affected horses investigated magnesium and boron supplementation and reported an approximately 64% reduction in headshaking frequency during the magnesium + boron treatment period compared with the hay-only period.

While these findings are promising, boron and magnesium are not a cure for headshaking, and trigeminal-mediated headshaking should always be properly investigated and diagnosed by a veterinarian.

For use in conjunction with Magnesium Oxide 50%:

Easy feeding calculation:

• Boron AAC 10%: 2 g per 100 kg bodyweight daily
• Magnesium Oxide 50%: 3 g per 100 kg bodyweight daily

For a 500 kg horse, feed 10 g Boron AAC 10% + 15 g Magnesium Oxide 50% daily.

At this dosage, 1 kg of Boron AAC 10% will last approximately 100 days for a 500 kg horse.
